When 11-year-old Julie Welsh is diagnosed with juvenile arthritis, she details her struggle with her 89-year-old pen pal in Kansas, Mrs. Kaplan. Julie hates being different, but when her school sponsors a five-mile charity run, Julie's younger brother, Frankie, talks her into entering. Using crutches, Julie's progress in the race is slow, but she learns that sometimes winners finish last.
